Headache Chiropractor Fremantle:
Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

If you suffer from regular headaches, you're not alone and you may not have found the real cause yet. Many headaches that are dismissed as tension headaches or managed with pain relief medication actually originate from structures in the neck. These are known as cervicogenic headaches, and chiropractic care is one of the most effective treatments available.

At North Fremantle Chiropractic, we assess and treat headaches by finding their source. If your headaches are coming from your cervical spine and many are we can help you get lasting relief, not just temporary symptom management.

Types of Headaches We Treat

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches originate from the joints, muscles, or nerves of the cervical spine. They typically start at the base of the skull and radiate forward over the head, and are often accompanied by neck stiffness or pain. They are frequently made worse by sustained postures, screen use, or turning the head.

This is the type of headache that responds most directly to chiropractic care. By restoring normal cervical spine function, we address the source of the pain rather than masking it.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches present as a diffuse, band-like pressure around the head. They are often driven by muscle tension in the neck, upper back, and scalp all of which are addressed through chiropractic treatment and soft tissue therapy. Many patients who have been managing tension headaches with medication for years find significant relief through chiropractic care once the contributing musculoskeletal factors are addressed.

Migraine Management

While chiropractic care does not cure migraines, cervical spine dysfunction is a known trigger for migraine in many patients. Addressing this dysfunction can reduce migraine frequency and severity in susceptible individuals. We work collaboratively with GPs and neurologists where appropriate to provide comprehensive migraine management.

How We Assess and Treat Headaches

Getting the Diagnosis Right

Headache assessment at NFC begins with a detailed history covering headache frequency, location, character, duration, triggers, and associated symptoms. We perform a thorough neurological and musculoskeletal examination to identify whether your headaches have a cervicogenic component.

Where the clinical picture suggests a more serious cause, we refer appropriately. Your safety is always the priority.

Treatment

For cervicogenic and tension-type headaches, treatment at NFC typically includes cervical and upper thoracic adjustment, soft tissue therapy targeting the suboccipital muscles and upper trapezius, dry needling, and postural rehabilitation. We also address lifestyle and ergonomic factors that contribute to headache frequency.

Most patients with cervicogenic headaches notice significant improvement within the first 4-6 sessions.

FAQ SECTION:

Q: How do I know if my headaches are cervicogenic?

A: Common signs include headaches that start at the base of the skull, are associated with neck pain or stiffness, are triggered or worsened by neck movements or sustained postures, and are one-sided. A proper assessment will confirm whether your headaches have a cervicogenic component.

Q: Can chiropractic cure my headaches?

A: For cervicogenic and tension-type headaches, chiropractic care can provide significant and lasting relief by addressing the underlying musculoskeletal cause. Results vary depending on the type and chronicity of headache. We'll give you an honest assessment of what to expect at your first appointment.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: Most patients with cervicogenic headaches respond well within 6-10 sessions. Chronic headache sufferers may need a longer initial course of care. We'll outline a clear plan at your first appointment.

Q: Will I need to stop taking my headache medication?

A: No — we work alongside your GP and any medication you're currently taking. We'll advise you on this at your first appointment.

Q: Do I need a referral?

A: No referral needed. Book directly online or call 0414 316 261.
